Come Holy Spirit
It is entirely appropriate (and part of the plan!) that today, the Feast of Pentecost, is the day on which a new Pastoral Council is chosen for our parish. Every two years (with the exception of the retiring council, which has served for three years due to the extraordinary events of the past few years) a new group of names is pulled from the basket in front of the altar. Typically, this is not the way a Pastoral Council is chosen, but in 2004, when faced with establishing a P.C., Fr. John and I researched various methods of selection, as well as different formats for the gathering of councils, and came to the conclusion that if we believed that we were a parish led by the Holy Spirit, we should act that way and give the Spirit the say in choosing the next group. That dependence on the leadings of the Holy Spirit has served our parish well in the intervening years.
As St. Paul writes in today’s second reading, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit…to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” This observation has proved to be true for each council that has served, and will no doubt be the same for the names which are drawn from the basket at the 10 am Mass this Sunday.
Come Holy Spirit, with your creativity and inspiration, and lead us forward as we work to serve the Lord and one another.
